Why should we survey the Cross, and why is it wondrous?

It is wondrous because, although many, many people were executed in the same way for crimes they had committed, Jesus was executed voluntarily on the first Good Friday, out of love for us. On the cross he took on himself and paid for all the wrong that we do – even when we don’t mean to – all our greed, selfish- ness and pride; our lack of understanding and compassion; our unwillingness to consider other people’s needs or other ways of thinking.

So we survey the wondrous Cross firstly with joy because we need not struggle with guilt and shame at our mistakes.
But there’s more; having died for us, Jesus rose again on Easter Day, and lives for ever, thereby destroying death itself. If we admit and turn away from our wrongdoing, turn to Christ and believe in Him, we can be free of guilt and have eternal life with Him. Big reasons to rejoice and give thanks.
